After a special election was held in Texas on Tuesday, it appears the Democrats have lost yet another seat, as Republican Representative-elect Mayra Flores defeated Democratic candidate Dan Sanchez to fill the vacancy until January of next year. While a runoff isn’t generally uncommon, Flores didn’t just beat the Democrats, but also avoided the runoff due to accumulating 51% of the votes in a district that is 85% Hispanic.
During the upcoming 2022 midterm elections, Flores will have to compete against another Democrat Representative, Vincente Gonzalez. Still, using what time she has left, the Republican criticized the Biden administration and, more importantly, Vice President Kamala Harris and her lackluster actions at the Southern border.
Although the Vice President claimed that progress was being made at the border, the influx of migrants has plagued the White House since President Joe Biden took office. Speaking about the border and Kamala’s supposed role as the border “czar,” Flores, as can be seen in the video below, obliterated Harris using only three words. “She’s honestly useless.”
The Republican was sure to add, “I don’t know why she’s in that position. She hasn’t been here in south Texas to see what their policies are creating, the mess that they’re creating in our country, and that their policies are hurting real people.”
Not only did Flores lash out at the Biden administration, but Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus admitted that the restrictions surrounding Title 42 have not changed. “Current restrictions at the U.S. border have not changed: single adults and families encountered at the Southwest Border will continue to be expelled, where appropriate, under Title 42. As temperatures start to rise in the summer, human smugglers will continue to exploit vulnerable populations and recklessly endanger the lives of migrants for financial gain. The terrain along the Southwest Border is extreme, the summer heat is severe, and the miles of desert that migrants must hike after crossing the border are unforgiving. Our message to those who would try and gain illegal entry to the United States remains the same – don’t make the dangerous journey only to be sent back.”
Sharing their opinions online, users commented, “Pre-Biden policies made our nation stronger, safer and energy independent. Evaluate the mess Biden made of the country- including the border crisis, rising prices we pay for everything and increased violent crime. Does anyone seriously believe we are better off today than we were during Trump’s presidency?”
Another user wrote, “Everyone must also be aware that we are paying for these people to be in our country. They have no jobs, no health insurance, no housing. They are dependent on the government handouts, and I don’t think people pay their taxes thinking that they will be supporting people from other countries to be here. As taxpayers we need to be made aware of where our money is being spent.”
